The project starts from photography. While after the research on the increasing amount of digital images generated by people, I found a problem on the rapid development of information and communication technologies and the carbon footprint it brings. According to the research about photo storing, it is estimated that there will be 1.4 trillion pieces of photos taken by people,and over 7 trillion pieces of photos will be stored by people.With the advertising of cloud storage service, more and more photos will be sent to cloud data centers by users, which means more energy will be consumed to storing data of digital images.
With the further increase in Internet penetration, more people will use personal computers and mobile phones. The large amount of data needs to be stored. More data centers will be put into use. Depending on scope, in 2020 ICT stands for up to 7% of the total global electricity use. In the future, we can foresee that human society will invest a lot of power and manpower to operate data centers. While it is our responsibility to protect our environment, we should think about how to build a greener Internet.
While most photos uploaded to the cloud storage are seldom viewed by people, I am thinking about storing them locally to reduce the energy used as well as protecting the privacy.
