Turning Citrus Peel Waste into Valuable Kitchen Cleaning Products.
Inspired by a juice bar throwing a lot of orange peels every day, a thought was triggered. How can those peels, the material gifted by nature, be thrown into the trash can without thinking about it? This kind of natural material, called ‘waste’, deserves to be treated more appropriately.
In terms of chemical properties, orange peel essential oil have excellent antibacterial properties that can be used as natural substitutes for chemical detergent. In terms of physical properties, the treated orange peel can be transformed into biological materials.
So this project will take advantage of the chemical and physical properties of orange peels. Firstly, extract the essential oil from the orange peel which has antimicrobial property as a natural dishwashing detergent to replace the chemical dishwashing liquid. Then, convert the remaining orange peel after extracting essential oil into a dishwashing tool to replace the non-degradable polyester sponge.
This project presents a peel waste recycling system that is neglected in daily life to users in the form of products. It hopes users can more truly experience the process of giving peel waste a second life.At the same time, hopefully, the peel recycling process will get people thinking about: how can we redefine the use of this so-called waste? And how can we collaborate with beneficial natural systems to create more sustainable material prototypes?
