Different people from various cultural backgrounds form rich and diverse cultures in the world. A unique place, country, or group of people is defined by their specific culture and thus it is very important to develop and cherish one’s own cultures in this special and ever-changing time. As a Chinese, I am keen to study and treasure some of the traditional Chinese values that I endorse.
One of the most important values in Chinese culture is filial piety. According to Confucius, “Respecting and supporting the family’s senior members and handling their funeral affairs” are duties of younger generations, and “caring for the old and nurturing the young” are fundamental family virtues. In the modern context, proper gatherings and communications are crucial to Chinese people to help them to know their parents better and care for them accordingly. However, compared with the traditional Chinese houses design, the modern Chinese flats provides smaller and defined shared space, which is not good for family communications and eldercare.
I am aiming to propose modular furniture design at shared spaces in Chinese houses to provide more opportunities for gathering and communications among family members to take care of the elders in the families. Meanwhile, I also developed a model to verify the effectiveness of communications for the final design and potentially related designs.
At the beginning of the year 2020, the majority of Chinese people were asked to stay strictly at home for more than one month to stop COVID-19 from spreading, which unexpectedly provided a great opportunity for a family gathering. People explored many family activities in a limited shared space. By sourcing stories that happened at home during COVID-19 through public reaction data collected by government or other related media and also by interviewing some people, I found how people communicate through specific family activities. The stories are categorized according to the relative position of the people and then I used the model to verify the effectiveness of communications of different categories for a better understanding of the stories.
Case studies of multifunctional furniture and spaces that could enhance communications were also analyzed and they were verified by the communication effectiveness model for inspirations.
Finally, I proposed modular furniture that can be changed according to different family activities to meet the needs of various gatherings and communications. The furniture was proved to be useful in enhancing communications by the verification using the model developed. The final design of the furniture also provides more potentials of usage that could be explored by the users.
