Concept of exploring and interest in interior design materiality was evolving over my practice. As an interior design student and practitioner working with materials in one of the key parts in the process. Over years of studies, I was working live with materials such as wood, clay, metal with various methods and technologies.
I was aiming to explore what is interior design atmosphere and what is materiality in that. I investigate this topic in terms of colour, lighting, texture but also the ability to express emotions and influence the mood of people by the interior with the ability to change.
„Like the weather, atmospheres change all the time and that’s what makes the concept so important. An atmosphere cannot be an autonomous state; it cannot be in standstill, frozen. Atmospheres are productive, they are active agents. When you introduce atmosphere into a space, it becomes a reality machine.” Olafur Elison
Designing interiors is always connected with choosing specific materials – it can happen live with existing with them, or choosing some from catalogues what happens online. Those experiences made me become interested in this subject.Awareness about fundamental different processes of making materials made me thinking critically about that and compering made materials to the natural environment which we, as hu- mans, got around us.
Our ability of perceiving materials and surfaces evolved with the digitalization and industrial development of producing materials. To read seen material correctly it is required to go back to the original material – not the imitation, not processed ones. Adaptation of finishing materials in interiors makes us feel the interior atmosphere and get used to them as finishing without analysing where are those from. As the research of that aspect I am making moodboards and photographs of the materials and interiors, verifying understanding of them as separate as artefacts: in context of interior but also in the surrounding of water and forest as a place where those are from. Following that experiments I propose the design of the exhibition which can illustrate the researched subject.
Within the framework of these criteria, in the materiality research I started to divide them as: digital, physical, natural and artificial. Questions regarding positive sides of digitalisation and technology led my research to the predicting of future materiality.
