Niamh McGuinness is an Irish Artist living and working in the Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland. Having previously achieved a BFA in Sculpture and Combined Media from Limerick School of Art and Design, she is currently finishing a Masters of Letters Degree in Drawing from Glasgow School of Art. She works across multiple mediums with a core grounding in textiles and a concern with heritage, materiality and cultural identity.
This series of work is primarily concerned with place and time. It is also a response to having to abruptly return to her rural childhood home in the west of Ireland from Glasgow city as a result of the pandemic. This work is an attempt to visually explore heritage as empathy. It is based on the many Holy Wells and Grottos that are common in rural Ireland. These sculptural vessels, from construction to ruination, are an attempt to narrate the transferal of the energies that linger in these ancient places of worship. Borrowing from the architecture of these sites, these vessels are constructed in a pure form and then intentionally stained and sullied. Natural inks and elixir like liquids flow from one vessel to the other, leaving diaphanous and permanent stains on the structure.
Integral to the artists practice is the process of transformation. This series takes the material from source, to clean creation, to altering and ruining to revealing and documenting the remnants.The ritualistic and intentional ruining of the structures represents the reverent acts of worship and the physical donations brought to these sites over millennia, the changing beliefs systems and the residual energy left by the repetition and intention of these acts. This process aims to convey to viewers the importance of this rural area and the deeply vivid nature of the awe that the artist feels for the energy and history surrounding these places.
These delicate structures seek to explore the lingering residues of the intentions the long-dead. They are relics of past worshipers, of spaces that consume and hold what is brought to them, and returns it to those who visit next. This work questions whether these sites were sacred throughout time and whether the spaces themselves are innately sacred, and so attract worship, or is it the act of worship that creates a sense of sacredness?
